Moods 38: jack withers
This month’s Moods dooties in the dead of summer is by @jjackwithers, an Ann Arbor-based producer and DJ. They take us through digital realms far and wide, almost as an ode to discovering music on the internet in the 2010s. Perfect for an evening full-energy dance break in some AC.

The Questions
Where, geographically, did you grow up? Was it a single place or many places?
I grew up in Canton, michigan, and never left really until college. Nice place, really couldn't ask for more as far as childhood neighborhood goes. Great friends, great schools, great nature.
Can you pick one song in the mix and explain where you first listened to it? Who "introduced" you to these songs?
I first heard the first track in the mix, Pool Table by Shohei Amimori, while doing a Spotify listen-along with one of my best internet friends whom at the time I had not met in person. That entire Amimori album kind of became a symbol of that friendship, and when we finally met each other in person for the first time after years of knowing each other. We listened to it together in the car and it was a really cathartic experience. Such a great track and a strange, colorful energy.
Where and when did you first hear techno?
I first heard techno in its true form in the 512 Bunker, a dark and claustrophobic dance-dungeon that was set up by some friends in my freshman year. Techno is for everyone.
You’ve got the microphone. What do you want to say?
I just would want to say thanks for listening and supporting myself and the moods project!
The Rest
withers moved their commission to YBCA Ann Arbor, a space committed to nurturing the potential of children and teens, promoting healthy living, and supporting their neighbors.
We paired withers’ mix with a still from a 2020 film by Meriem Benani and Orian Barki—2 Lizards—which documents two lizard roommate friends during quarantine. The lizards hang out, watch TV, view the skyline, and go online, discussing real implications of quarantine; they become a proxy for all of us in quarantine, but a proxy for a quiet, anxious, online life—one that withers explores in their mix. You can watch the whole series here.
